There are roughly 30,000 species of orchids with 120,000 additional hybrids found in every continent throughout the world except in Antarctica. Orchids come in an enormous variety of sizes, shapes, and colors. The name is derived from the Greek word orchis which means "testes" and refers to the shape of the flower's roots but as many researchers claim, the orchid has definite feminine characteristics--it's
beautiful, delicate, exotic, & sensual.
Orchids are surprisingly resilient in their native habitat, most often classified as 'epiphytes':
meaning that they cling to their host for support but do not feed off of it as a parasite would. Their roots are aerial,
preferring open air exchange instead of being buried in soil. Their white roots gather moisture and nutrients from water and air.
Scientists identified that the orchid cell membranes contain a longevity molecule. The orchid root extracts contain exceptional biological compounds, among them polyphenols, which fight free radicals and triterpenes, a phytochemical that may stimulate the formation of lipids and proteins necessary for healthy skin.
The orchid flower apparently helps reverse skin aging, calms inflammation, and helps increase cell turnover. It is a powerful antioxidant.
